Framing Options

Photo print in custom matted frame by The Black and White Box.

Matted Frame

  • This is the most popular method of framing by far. A custom cut matt board acts as a window for the print to sit within.
  • Creating a space between the image and the glass simply keeps the image flat and archival.
  • The size and colour of the matt board surrounding your image can be customised to satisfy your desired outcome.

Setback/Spaced Frame

  • A popular way to protect your print without the use of a matt board is to set it directly atop the backing that sits within the frame. By meticulously mounting the image, it sits freely without touching the glass.
  • The colour and width of the backing, as well as the space between your image and the frame are completely customisable.
  • Besides the unique style of the setback frame, it also serves as highly functional, particularly when choosing to make your print archival
  • Set-back framing can also be imagined without a visible backing board, where the image is set to the edge of the frame.

Floating Frame

  • This effect displays the whole image as floating within the frame, with space between both the backing and glass, while exposing the print’s seams and edges.

Glass Options

Your decision here will affect two things; how much UV light is let onto the artwork and how much reflection can be seen on the glass. The more UV that is blocked the better, as UV degrades both colour and paper. Over time, indoor and outdoor ultraviolet rays take a toll on artwork and cause fading and discolouration.

Standard Glass

40-45% UV protection and no anti-reflective coating. This is the most cost-effective way to frame a print.

AR70 Artglass

Filters 70% of UV rays and provides an almost invisible finish for an exceptional, reflection-free viewing experience. It’s as though there is no glazing in the frame, the finer details of the artwork are easier to see and the colours are more vibrant.

AR99 Museum Glass

This glass is the most effective UV blocking glass on the market and is has an anti-reflective coating. When clean, it is extremely hard to tell there is glass there at all. Museum grade glass blocks 99% of UV rays and is easy to clean. Ideal for custom framing limited edition prints, original works of art, and posters. It is ideal for protecting items of sentimental or monetary value.

Mounting Options

Foam Board

Ideal for framing and smaller-scale mounting. Our foam board uses a permanent adhesive that bonds the print securely to the surface over time. It’s a practical and cost-effective option for posters, photographs, exhibition prints and works that can be reprinted if needed. The adhesive is acid-free and the board is pH-neutral and buffered, providing a clean and stable mounting solution for everyday display and framing.

Kapa

Our most popular mounting option, kapa is a lightweight foam board reinforced with aluminium liners for added rigidity and strength. We use a permanent adhesive to bond the print to the board, creating a secure and long-lasting finish. Kapa offers greater structural stability than standard foam board, making it ideal for larger works, exhibitions, and presentation pieces where durability and a more premium backing are important.

Dibond

Dibond is a lightweight, rigid composite material made from two sheets of archival-quality aluminium with a thermoplastic core. It offers a clean extremely smooth surface and excellent durability. Aluminium hangers are available at an additional cost, making installation simple and secure.

Acrylic Facemount

The artwork is mounted front-facing behind conservation clear acrylic with 99% UV protection, then backed with white or black Perspex for a clean, contemporary look. Aluminium hangers are available at an additional cost, making installation simple and secure.

Lamination

Lamination applies a protective film over your print to increase durability and extend its life. The laminate includes UV protection to help guard against fading and surface damage. You can choose either a gloss finish, which enhances colour and contrast, or a matte finish, which reduces glare and gives a softer look.
